Natural stone marble, granite, limestone, travertine ranks among the most striking and expensive finish materials in Australian construction. It is also highly unforgiving when the wrong sealant touches it. A single bead of acetoxy cure silicone on a polished marble vanity can leave a permanent oil stain within 24 hours. You cannot sand it back. Full stone replacement becomes the only remedy. This is precisely why SS100’s 100% neutral cure chemistry is non negotiable.
The Chemistry Behind the Problem: Acetoxy vs. Neutral Cure
Most standard silicone sealants sold in hardware stores use acetoxy cure chemistry. These products release acetic acid as they cure the familiar vinegar smell confirms it. On non porous surfaces like glass and ceramic, this causes no problem. On porous materials like natural stone and some unglazed tiles, however, the acetic acid absorbs into the substrate. It reacts with minerals and leaves a permanent yellowing or darkening stain directly beneath the sealant bead. Neutral cure silicone avoids this entirely. It uses an oxime or alcohol based cure mechanism that releases no acidic byproduct so the sealant cures cleanly without any chemical reaction with the substrate.

Applications Where SS100 Is the Correct Specification
Specify SS100 wherever natural stone, sensitive ceramics, or metals sit in or adjacent to the joint. Key applications include:
- Marble and granite vanity tops around basins, taps, and wall junctions
- Kitchen benchtops in natural stone splashback junctions, sink perimeters, and wall meets
- Limestone, travertine, and sandstone tiling floor to wall junctions and movement joints
- Anodised aluminium and copper fixtures where acetoxy acid causes surface oxidation
- Commercial stone cladding internal and external stone panel junctions
Colour Matching for a Professional Finish
Colour match is just as critical as chemistry in stone installation. A white silicone bead against grey granite or a beige sealant beside bright white grout draws the eye immediately and undermines an otherwise flawless installation. SS100’s 22 Gloss and 14 Matte colour options let tilers and stonemasons select the closest match to both stone colour and grout shade. For complex colour matching, the Simseal team advises on the best available option within the SS100 range.

Application Notes for Natural Stone
Surface preparation is critical. Ensure stone surfaces are clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, and prior sealant residue before applying SS100. For highly polished stone, a light solvent wipe improves adhesion. Mask adjacent surfaces for a clean bead line and tool within the sealant’s open time. Allow full cure typically 24 to 48 hours depending on joint size before exposing to water.
